Real Estate Assistant, Meg Burke, tells us all the details of her vegan lifestyle and shares some of her favorite recipes for a Vegan Thanksgiving.

What's it like to be Vegan in the Greater Boston Area?

What’s it like to be Vegan in the Greater Boston Area?

Ask anyone in Boston what their favorite month is, and nobody will be surprised when they say, “November!”  The calendar is full of holidays, gratitude, gold and orange and red leaves greeting you in every corner–but did you know that November is also World Vegan Month?  Read along as we catch up with our Real Estate Assistant, Meg Burke, on what it’s like to be living the vegan lifestyle.

About Meg…

Meg’s superpowers include empathy, observation and problem-solving.  She might have been a golden retriever in another life, which could be why she’s never without her loyal golden pup, Toad. It also explains how she’s worked in real estate for the last five years, guiding folks through the exciting life-changing event of buying and selling their homes, and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Meg and her spouse are new homeowners, and when she isn’t working or studying, you’ll find her hiking, riding her Peloton, or singing loud to Disney soundtracks.

How long have you been vegan?

I have been vegan for 4 years now. I was a vegetarian prior to that since I was 13.

In your opinion, what’s the best thing about being vegan?

I get to enjoy really delicious, intentional food and not feel sad over what I’m eating like I used to.

You mention intentional food, can you elaborate a little more on that?

I love the word intentional! To me it means being mindful and being true to myself, my beliefs, and my heart. Choosing to eat vegan is an intentional way I can honor that!

What’s the hardest part of a vegan lifestyle?

Definitely going to dinner parties or weddings where food is being served to me. I always make sure to pack some snacks in the car in case there isn’t anything I can eat!

What is your favorite food?

I love potatoes so much. I could live off of them!  French fries, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, hash browns, home fries. I’m also known as the Condiment Queen. I love condiments!

Where are your go-to restaurants in the Greater Boston Area?

There are so many good ones! I’m a big fan of Juicygreens, VeeVee and Purple Cactus in Jamaica Plain. Taco Party in Somerville is a little vegan taco spot and SO GOOD. I also love Veggie Galaxy (Cambridge), Fomu (best vegan ice cream ever, multiple locations), and Genki Ya (multiple locations) has great vegan/vegetarian sushi options!

Which is your favorite?

That is so hard. If I had to choose one, I think it would be Taco Party.

In your opinion, what is the best market or grocery store to shop at for vegans?

My wallet doesn’t always appreciate it but Whole Foods is my go-to.  They have soooo many vegan options!  I feel like a kid in a candy store. Trader Joes also has more and more vegan-friendly food released all the time.

Are there any fun vegan events in the Greater Boston Area that you’d recommend?

Boston Veg Fest was actually just a few weeks ago.  I know there are vegan get-togethers on meetup.com too! In other areas there are a lot of fun vegan events. Rhode Island has a vegan restaurant week, Worcester has declared an official vegan week, and there is a New England VegFest.

I get to enjoy really delicious, intentional food and not feel sad over what I’m eating like I used to… To me it means being mindful and being true to myself, my beliefs, and my heart. Choosing to eat vegan is an intentional way I can honor that!

Tell us a little bit about your Thanksgiving Table?

Most of my family, other than my mom who is a vegetarian, are meat-eaters. My mom is an amazing cook and always makes us a vegan version of what everyone else is eating.  I’m pretty simple with what I like: mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegan turkey, cranberry sauce, rolls. My mouth is watering just thinking about it… I can’t wait for Thanksgiving!

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of going vegan?

Be kind to yourself, you cannot always be perfect. Take it one step at a time. There are so many great options and being vegan and vegetarian is way easier and much more accepted now than it was when I was growing up so you can do this!!!! Also choose your battles! We can’t win them all. Be respectful of other people’s lifestyle choices, just like you want others to be respectful of yours.
